Today is 17th of Tamuz according the Hebrew calendar. The day that also known as Shiva Asar B'Tammuz or Day that many Jews fast and pray, is the start of a three-week mourning for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples.
According the history this fast is honors few tragic events that occurred on this day:
1. Moses broke the tablets when he saw the Jewish people worshiping the golden calf
2. During the Babylonian siege, Babylonians breached the walls of Jerusalem on their way to destroying the first Temple. The first Temple was destroyed three weeks later.
3. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans, in 69 CE, after a lengthy siege. (Three weeks later, after the Jews put up a valiant struggle, the Romans destroyed the second Holy Temple on the 9th of Av)
Interesting fact that both Temples were destroyed on the same day.
I don't fast on 17th of Tamuz, not because I don't believe that those things happen on this days, I don't know. They might, they might not. What I know is that it did happen and left a lesson for us. One of the beauty to be a Jew and accept Jesus as a Messiah is to have this huge incredible culture with new covenant. Double blessing as I called it.
What I do on those days that my people fast and pray? I pray for them. I remember that Jesus once said that after him Temple will be destroyed, and although I very sad part of our history I'm very happy because I know that now we're the Temple where God resides.
